NANI
What is NANI?
NANI is a one-hour bilingual play about Nani, a Spanish-speaking immigrant woman from Perú who has dreamed her whole life of living in the U.S.A. Hired as a live-in maid in Boca Raton, Florida, she struggles to find genuine connection and a sense of belonging. Nani is a funny, witty narrator, but her friends—Yaniko, Cassandra, and Katia—challenge inconsistencies in her account until she eventually reveals the ways this family exploited and endangered her. Moving back and forth in time and across fragmented moments, the play follows the way Nani thinks, clueing us into her messy understanding of an American dream that never came true.

NANI is an experimental, bilingual theatrical play designed for indoor performances. The show runs for one hour and is presented in both Spanish and English, accompanied by live subtitles. Please note that the play includes sensitive content, specifically discussions around sexual assault.
We seek a performance space equipped to accommodate projections (necessary for our live subtitles), a versatile lighting setup (not limited to stage lights, but anything that facilitates transitions between different worlds), and adequate sound design (including speakers and a designated area for our stage manager to operate sound cues). A critical requirement is a venue where partial or complete darkness can be achieved, along with a dark background for effective subtitle projection. Beyond these essentials, we can adapt to various setups.
The set for NANI is minimal, consisting of just four boxes or chairs, and our props are simple enough to transport and store easily. Our last performance took place in a black box theater, utilizing a space approximately ten feet by ten feet, with a more or less in-the-round configuration.
